POLYCHROMOS PENCILS TEST

CHARACTERISTICS

These Faber-Castell colored pencils come in a nice range of 120 colors (I have about 60 of them). They are water and light resistant and have an unbreakable lead.

As for the price, I find it really correct for pencils of such quality, and can be found for around 1.80€ per pencil.

Review

At first, I was afraid I would have a difficult time using these pencils, since coloring a drawing with pencils is not the easiest thing. Indeed, you can’t layer colors as many times as with pastel for instance. Or neither with as much freedom as you can only overlay a dark color on top of a darker one, but the reverse is not possible (except to blend or fade the colors together).

However, these pencils immediately hooked me. First, their grip is very pleasant; they glide in hand, not to mention their aesthetic aspect (even if it’s not the most important thing). I really like their feel on the paper, quite soft and very smooth. You can sense that the pencils are of good quality.

In my opinion, the colors blend rather well together, the result is great. You can see it on the drawing of this zebra that I made, a few hours after my purchase. The whole process really showed me how comfortable they are to handle and use! I really appreciate the depth effect on the nose in particular.

Moreover, the white colored pencil allowed me to blend the colors together when I wanted to, which gave me a really realistic and deep outcome, although there is always room for improvement, of course! It shows quite well on the drawing of my cat that I made as a gift for my father, particularly in the nose and the eyes.

Are they worth it?

You can invest in this pencil set with your eyes closed! Compared to other brands, the price is correct for pencils of this quality, and the quality claimed by Faber-Castell of unbreakable lead is not fake, there is no need to worry!

The colors are bright, well balanced, and blend nicely together as I told you before with the little zebra. Nevertheless, I find that drawing with pencils is not necessarily the simplest.

The pencil fit easily in my hand and I achieved many pencil drawings quite fast thanks to them (except for the cat). I had no hesitation during drawing the lion below. I made it during a weekend I thought “Let’s test those pencils a second time!” It’s funny how it has become one of my favorite drawings.

The final word

To conclude, I would say that these are great pencils, with nice bright colors. They are quite economical on one hand regarding the price and on the other hand considering the quality of the lead. It is indeed sturdy and you don’t have to press down a lot to get a nice rendering. Their grip is easy and the colors blend really well together.

I don’t have much to say about this purchase, except that perhaps a larger range of color that would be a benefit, even if personally, it hasn’t been a hindrance. You have to know how to compromise with what you have sometimes!

A little advice for the road: Get’s started! It’s by trying that you learn!
